Students, you might like to share this video with your family.  Pardon the blurry photos--the lights were dim and flash photography was not permitted.

I took a preview trip to the museum in December.  Here is a video that I made from the photos I took during my visit.

Biography Timeline Example

Posted February 24, 2014

Here are a two examples from last year's class and a checklist to use as you create your own famous person's timeline.
  • Is your famous person's name posted in an important place?
  • Is the timeline a straight line?
  • Does your "paper doll" character resemble your famous person?
  • Did you plan ahead?  Two captions above the line and two below, so they all fit?
  • Are your important events in order from left to right?
  • Did you put your name on the paper?  Small writing in a corner would be best.
  • You may add items associated with your famous person to add to the effectiveness of your presentation.  The ball on the top example informs the reader that Pele must be from Brazil and....he must be a soccer player.  The addition of Pele's face provides additional important information.

Polar Express Word Cloud

Posted December 17, 2013

Here's a Word Cloud that our class created today from our class survey about important words from the Polar Express.

Which version do you like best?

This is "Version A"

This is "Version B."  It is called an INVERSION because the train is black and the words are in the background.

Today is Polar Express Day!

Please fill out this survey.  When you finish, you may engage in the Polar Express on-line games that I have posted on the Language Arts tab.

Art in Action Video "Van Gogh's Starry Night"

Posted December 13, 2013

Here's a video I made that shares what the students created last month.  Marvelous variations on a theme!

Posted December 6, 2013

Our reports are due next Tuesday, December 10. You may write a paragraph or an essay about your topic. A few students will share their report orally in class each day between December 10-18.

Here is an example that I made for a holiday that none of the students selected. I wrote an essay because I found so much information on my topic. I answered the WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHEN, and WHERE questions from the information sheet and it helped me write my essay. I then added some art that I found by doing a Google search on "Las Posadas" and then clicking on "images."

I learned a lot of new facts about my holiday--I hope you do too!

Halloween is...

Posted November 13, 2014

Good writers create rich, descriptive sentences.  Here is a "book" created by some of the students featuring sentences that include adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases.  Nouns and verbs are necessary parts of a sentences--but the other words create an image and give the sentence pizzazz!  Don't you agree?

Veterans Day Letter to a Marine

Posted November 7, 2013

In observance of Veterans Day and in honor of the individuals who are serving in the military, each student will write a letter to a soldier from the LG mountains who just turned 22 and is currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan.  We will be sending him a care package along with our letters.  We're calling it "Candy for Andy"--and he says the soldiers like canned Chef Boyardee and homemade cookies.  The care package will ship at the end of NEXT week.

If you would like to read an article about Andy click HERE.

Below is a video that we watched to give us a glimpse into what life is like for Andy.  Before watching the video, we made observations about what we "saw" in the opening frame and what we could "infer" from the expression on the soldiers face.  It prompted an interesting class discussion.
