Math Vocabulary

Here is Math Vocabulary from our homework sheet (and math journal) for students to access at home.  Sorry, it doesn't contain my drawings!

point- an exact position or location
line- is straight, continues in both directions, and does not end
line segment- is straight, has two endpoints, is part of a line
ray- has one endpoint and continues in one direction
vertex- the point where two rays or line segments join

right angle- an angle that forms a square corner

greater than a right angle less than a right angle
intersecting lines- lines that cross
parallel lines- lines that never cross
polygon- a closed figure with straight sides
quadrilateral- any polygon that has 4 sides and 4 angles
pentagon (5)               hexagon (6)                           octagon (8)
equilateral triangle- 3 equal sides

isosceles triangle- 2 equal sides

scalene triangle- 0 equal sides

right triangle- 1 right angle
rhombus-  2 pairs of parallel sides, 4 equal sides

trapezoid- 1 pair of parallel sides, lengths of sides may not be the same

parallelogram- 2 pairs of parallel sides, 2 pairs of equal sides
