Ohlone Day Music and Dance

Posted September 9, 2012
Nine families from our class enjoyed a relaxing and educational afternoon at "Ohlone Day" in the Henry Cowell Redwoods.  Photos from the day are posted on our photo page.  Below is my recording of the Ohlone "Acorn Grinding" song.  We will compare and contrast this "Acorn Grinding" song with the "Corn Grinding" song of the Navajo Nation.  Did you know that 70% of the Ohlone nutritional diet came from acorn mush?  The acorns first needed to be grinded into flour and then cooked with hot rocks, in order to remove the bitter tannins, before it could be eaten as a delicious sweet "mush."
